Do It Yourself Energy Saving

White-elastomeric roof coatings often generate savings that far exceed their initial cost.

Savings occur in the following ways:

  • Dramatic reduction in solar-heat transferring from roof surfaces to living areas, causing a reduction in cooling costs
  • Shielding asphalt-roof surfaces from damaging UV-radiation dramatically extends roof life (delays roof replacement, sometimes indefinitely)
  • Resealing roof surfaces reduces the possibility of water leakage and interior damage, roof damage, and additional repairs

Black surfaces absorb most solar heat energy and allow roof temperatures to
soar up to 180°F.

Granulated roofing surfaces, such as roll roofing or shingles, reflect about 22 percent of the sun’s heat, and that’s only when they are new. Aluminum coatings can reflect 50-55 percent of the sun’s heat when new, but may drop below 40 percent as they tarnish over time. In contrast, E•las•tek™ white reflective coatings reflect up to 90 percent of the sun’s energy (chroma meter) when new, more than 80 percent as they age.

High Reflectivity Keeps it Cool

A simple touch-test can prove the value of high reflectivity. Most roof surfaces, including aluminum-coated roofs, are too hot to touch on a warm day. White elastomeric coatings are usually only several degrees warmer than air temperature.

On the hottest desert afternoon, an E•las•tek coated roof will feel cool to the touch!

Roofs often act as heat sinks, causing heat to be accumulated and stored in roofing materials, insulation, crawl spaces, ductwork, and attics. This solar heat is redistributed to building interiors long after the sun has set.

E•las•tek coatings reduce the heat stored in these areas, due both to reflection and the low-heat conductivity of the coatings themselves.

Our customers tell us they realize inside heat reductions of 5° to 20°. Air conditioners cycle less often and an evaporative cooler can replace the air conditioner most of the time.

Florida Solar Energy Center tests indicated that white elastomeric coatings reduce air conditioning use an average of 24 percent, and energy costs from 11-43 percent, varying by the type of home. Because many Southwest homes are single-story (maximum roof-to-floor space ratio) and most ductwork is in the ceiling just below the roof, savings are often dramatic.

E•las•tek™ white elastomeric roof coatings are the ideal environmental product:

  • Safe
  • Easy-to-use
  • Lowers roof surface & inside temperatures
  • Saves cooling costs, heating costs, and lowers energy consumption
  • Extends the life of building materials; reduces replacement and landfill costs
  • Contributes to lowering the “heat-sink” temperatures in cities
  • Affordable
  • Long-lasting

UV-Protection Extends Roof Life

Roof life in Arizona is often less than 10 years. Heat and UV rays from the sun quickly destroy the natural solvents in asphalt materials, causing them to dry out and become brittle. Asphalt materials often shrink and crack, causing a checkered appearance. As they dry out, the asphalt binder loses its adhesive properties and is prone to leak. Roof replacement is then required.

Asphalt roofs can be saved from solar destruction!

Scientific field and lab studies by Rohm Haas Corporation have shown conclusively that asphalt roofs coated with a quality white elastomeric roof coating have a much longer life expectancy than uncoated roofs. Coatings stop sun damage, add additional moisture protection, and actually strengthen the surface of asphalt roofing, increasing the longevity of roofing mat, scrim, and felt. Homeowners often fail to recognize this savings because they don’t need to spend the money to replace their roof.

E•las•tek manufactures high quality elastomeric coatings that goes down whiter and stays whiter for maximum protection. E•las•tek also offers a complete line of high quality elastomeric reflective topcoats, patching compounds, puddle fillers, and base coats. All E•las•tek products are manufactured in Tucson for the Southwestern climate.
